Thanks for giving Cast Off a try. Cast Off is a utility designed to clean out your preference folder. Cast Off works hand in hand with novice users and expert users alike. Cast Off is more intelligent then other preference cleaners on the market! It creates indexes of your system to try and find which preferences truly are orphaned, it also lets you specify folders and files to skip over. Now you don’t have to see that “System Preference” keep popping up again and again, you can set Cast Off to ignore it!
Quick Start
Here is a fast and easy way to get introduced to Cast Off.
1) Launch Cast Off
2) Take a quick glance at the splash screen and click “Scan”
3) A new window will appear and Cast Off will begin doing a complete scan
4) After the scan is complete there will be a listing of any orphaned preferences found, click on each one to get detailed information below. If you decide you would like to delete a preference then click its checkbox.
5) Now click “Delete” and Cast Off will write a log if necessary and then delete the selected preferences, then a new window will appear with statistics on what you deleted.
6) That’s it! Of course Cast Off has many more features for you to explore.
Cast Off Options
“What do all those things in the Cast Off preference dialog do?”
Cast Off has many options to suit just about everything. The different options are listed below with explanations.
Scan only true preferences - If this option is checked it will ignore all preferences except the ones with the file type “pref”. If you don’t already know every single file on your Mac has a file type, which tells Mac OS what type of file it is. By default preferences are supposed to have the file type “pref”, except not everyone follows that.
Ignore Apple preferences - Check this option if you would like to ignore preferences created by any Apple software. Cast Off can do a check to try and see if it was created by any Apple software.
Note: This option is not 100% fool proof, and on rare occasions it will think a non-Apple preference is an Apple preference.
Write log files - If this option is selected Cast Off will make a log file after each scan listing what was found and what was deleted. Can be useful in a office environment or for more advanced users.
Note: This option is selected by default
File Exclusions - You can select preferences to be ignored by Cast Off. For example if a preference keeps popping up as orphaned but it really isn’t then you can set it as a file exclusion and Cast Off will ignore it.
Folder Exclusions - A folder exclusions allows you to set Cast Off to ignore an entire folder within the preference folder.
